From: breck@kirk.ecs.umass.edu (Liam Breck)
Subject: [!] Archive reorg: Intro & proposal
Liam Breck and Bill Lipa have been working on a new file organization
system for the archive so that its files are stored by subject rather
than form. For example, a system extension that changes the way buttons
look is stored (by form) in the cp directory under the current system, but
will be stored (by subject) in the Interface directory under the new system.
This reorganization was originally proposed last fall, to mixed
reviews. We have carefully considered the feedback we received, and
made significant changes to the proposal. We believe that this plan
will make the archive significantly easier to learn for new users and
more useful and faster for veterans.
The reorganization will be phased in over 10 to 15 weeks. 100-200
files will be moved to their new homes each week. The reorganization
affords us an opportunity to do some cleanup of file names and
duplicates, as well.
At this point we will consider feedback, but we will not hold up the
reorganization unless a serious reason emerges. We have been debating
this system for 10 months! You may (if you must :-) email comments to
info-mac-request@sumex-aim.stanford.edu and CC them to
breck@zonker.ecs.umass.edu.
A complete description follows of the proposed directories. This
description will be included in the archive as
help/directory-contents.txt as a guide for users and moderators.
/info-mac/help/directory-contents.txt
revision: 25-Apr-93
[Note: comments in [] brackets will be removed in the final version]
Each directory in the archive has two names, one descriptive and one
abbreviated for ease of repeated use. The descriptive names are
capitalized so they will sort to the top of directory listings. Here
is an example of an entry in the following list:
DescriptiveName name
A description of the contents of this directory. It may be
accessed with both "cd DescriptiveName" and "cd name".
SubdirectoryDescriptiveName sub
A description of the contents of this subdirectory of name. It may
be accessed with both
"cd DescriptiveName/SubdirectoryDescriptiveName" and "cd name/sub".

I am sending you AirTraffic Controller 4.0, a 1987 game by
Walter J. Biess. I found it on one of my old backup disks,
and don't remember where I first got it. It still seems to
work, after all these years, even on a MacIIci under system
7.1. Since I haven't seen it anywhere else (that I remember)
I thought others might enjoy giving it a try. Shareware.
There appear to be no restrictions on distribution. Compact
Pro'd, then BinHex4'd.
After you start the game, planes come flying into your territory
>From 8 directions and 8 altitudes. Each plane either announces
that it wants to land on one of your airports, or that it wants
to exit your territory at a specified exit point (direction) and
altitude. You must guide the planes to their destination without
causing them to crash or to collide. Tougher than it sounds.

Subject: [*] NewsWatcher 1.3d8
NewsWatcher 1.3d8 is a modified version of Steve Falkenburg's "NewsWatcher"
Mac newsreader. It is based on Steve's version 1.0.2 and incorporates code
contributions by Ron Flax, Steve Klingsporn, John Norstad, Larry
Rosenstein, Jeroen Scheerder, and Neal Trautman.
Version 1.3d8 is a maintenance release to fix several errors and problems
reported by users in version 1.3d6. There are no new features.
NewsWatcher is free. It may not be resold for profit or included with
software which is sold for profit, but otherwise you should feel free to
use it and redistribute it.
Please note that this is a development version of the program (it's not
even beta yet!). That's what the "d" stands for in the version number
"1.3d8". Many features are not yet implemented. There are many known
problems and errors which have not yet been fixed. You can expect existing
features to change as the development process continues. If you require
perfection in your software, do not use this program!
On the other hand, you shouldn't let the previous paragraph frighten you.
Most people report that NewsWatcher is very robust, even in its current
unfinished state, and they find it useful and like the program.
The following documents are included along with the program. They are all
in Microsoft Word format.
Read Me: A short readme file.
User Doc: Basic instructions for using the program.
To Do: Detailed to do and wish list.
Mod History: A detailed history of all the changes made to the program.

Welcome to our new utility for the Macintosh game Bolo. Convinced that Bolo
is
the best game imaginable for a handfull of networked Macs hooked to various
engineers (or whatever populates Macs at your site), we set out to make it
easier and faster to get *newer*, *better*, and *cooler* maps.
Bolotomy reads in a PICT file and converts it to a Bolo map. Along the way
you
will be able to preview how the final map looks and easily remap color
intensities
(or shades of gray) to types of terrain, place bases and pillboxes, and tweak
the size of your PICT.

Well, I am the author and was a bit surprised to see this new file replace
the old one (also in info-mac/comm, but containing MUDDweller 1.0 WITH
documentation). I am including in this mail version 1.1d4 of MUDDweller.
This is a development version, and not even the newest one, but it is the
version I would recommend using. Sadly, I have not been able to do any more
work on this program for quite a while. If you are interested, you can find
several versions as well as the source code of MUDDweller on rudolf.ethz.ch
[129.132.57.10] in /pub/mud.
-- Olivier
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This file contains MUDDweller 1.1d4, with the documentation for
version 1.0.
Changes in version 1.1d1:
- Lines longer than 80 characters are now word-wrapped (words
are no longer truncated at the end of the line).
Changes in version 1.1d2:
- The input field is now resizeable. The sizer bar separating
the input from the transcript can be dragged to change the
size of the input field.
- The input field now allows more than 255 characters to be
edited, making the "Send Clipboard" command obsolete.
Changes in version 1.1d3:
- Under A/UX it is now possible to close and reopen MacTCP
connections. However, the end of a connection is still not
detected before some text has been sent (there seems to be a
bug in the MacTCP implementation under A/UX).
- It is now possible to specify a host name instead of a TCP/IP
address. However, this name is not saved in the document in
order not to change the document file format (this will be
fixed in version 1.1 final).
Changes in version 1.1d4:
- Fixed some bugs in the use of communication tools (causing
crashes and preventing tool-specific menus to appear).
- Added some support for VT100 emulation and for disabling
Telnet protocol (these settings are not saved, however).
- Fixed a bug which caused problems when connecting to a server
running on the same machine.

Subject: !HELP---my SE/30 won't work!
This is an emergency for me.
For some strange reason, since this morning, when I startup
my SE/30 I get the dialog that reads (roughly) `This disc
is unreadle; do you want to initialize.' The icon in the
dialog box seems to indicate that the disc referred to is
an external floppy, or something like that. I don't have
an external floppy drive. Plus, pressing [Eject] removes
the dialog box only temporarily, for it reappears almost
immediately; and pressing [Initialize] gives me the message
that reads (roughly) `Cannot initialize because disc is
copy protected.'
I can boot with a System 7.0.1 Disk Tools disc, and everything
is fine (my internal and external drives mount OK); but I get
the same troublesome dialog box if I try to boot with a System
7.0 Disk Tools disc. Disk First Aid and Norton Utilities say
that everything is OK, but that's clearly not true. Note that
pressing the [Drive] button in Disk First Aid, I am told that
there is no external floppy drive connected; that's never
happened before.
I tried zapping the PRAM, but that didn't help. Next I tried
replacing the System file, but that didn't help, either.
Finally, I reformatted my internal (boot) drive, and reinstalled
the entire System, but even that didn't help. The only way I am
able to boot is from the System 7.0.1 Disk Tools disc.
Any help you provide will be greatly appreciated. Please let me
know if you need more info to go on. Presently, I'm just frazzled
by the whole situation---most annoying, to say the very least.
Again, thanks in advance.

It has been reported that you can indeed replace the 68LC040 with a

Subject: Accessing the Internet from home!
Netters-
It's not clearly stated in my AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA) manual, but ARA
supports MacTCP. All of my TCP/IP applications (Gopher, Fetch, Eudora,
etc) work just fine from my Mac at home. I apologize if this is common
knowledge and would like to thank Eric Behr for his excellent report
Mac-TCP-Info. Here is the setup.
Work- MacPlus (connected to the net via localtalk and a gatorbox), ARA,
Sys 7 and an AT&T 14400 modem.
Home- MacPlus, ARA, MacTCP 1.1.1, Sys 7 and a 2400 modem.
The performance surprised me, considering the MacPlus with Sys7 and 2400
baud modem . I transferred a 112K document from my Mac at work in about
7-8 minutes. Gopher seemed to work even faster. Now I AM tempted to get
14400 modem for home.
NOTE: Be sure to see your network manager about how to configure MacTCP!

Subject: Boomerang and SuperBoomerang
Hi, Netters,
Regarding several recent postings about Boomerang and SuperBoomerang, I
also have been unable to get Boomerang 2.02 to work with System 7.1 on my
Mac IIci. I tried it under System 6.0.7 and it worked fine. Several netters
suggested using Default Folder as an alternative, but I found that one of
my favorite features of Boomerang is not duplicated. Under Boomerang, when
you open a file from a long list of files, then return to open another one,
the open file dialog returns to the last file opened rather than to the top
of the list. This is really useful for example when analyzing a large
number of data files sequentially, especially when they have similar names.
Anyone know of an alternative for this function, or whether SuperBoomerang
has this feature? I actually would be happy with just this one feature of
Boomerang! (Hint to hackers...)

The Connectix Corp. is now done working version 2.0 of CPU. I just

Subject: DPI-On-The-Fly and NEC monitors (follow-up)
I've received quite a few questions/requests after my previous posting on
the subject. Here's a follow-up.
DPI-On-The-Fly is a Monitor extension (i.e. you access it by launching the
Monitor control panel and clicking the Option button). It was written by
Alysis (the maker of SuperDisk, More Disk Space, etc.) and distributed by
NEC free of charge (to owners of NEC multisync monitors). If you have an
NEC multisync monitor (other than MacSync) and a Quadra or Centris (which
have programmable video controllers), you can obtain a copy of the software
by calling (312)622-7427 (with your monitor serial number ready). Version
1.0 of the software only works Q700/900/950 and doesn't support the 19"
resolution (1024x768). (The supported resolutions are 640x480, 832x624 and
1152x870). A newer version of the software will work with the Centrises and
Quadra 800 (which have different video controller).
The software works with non-NEC autoscanning monitors as well. However, NEC
apparently has the exclusive right to distribute the software (even Alysis
cannot sell it).
One final tip. DPI-On-The-Fly is nominally a cdev so it will be placed in
the Control Panels folder. Move it to the Extensions folder and rename it
(using you favorite method) so it loads first (even before any INIT
manager if you prefer). If you don't do this, the start-up icons before the
DPI-On-The-Fly loads will be in B/W and your screen (with start-up icons)
will be messed up as DPI-On-The-Fly loads in the middle of the start-up
sequence.

Subject: Ehman Drive Problems (Q)
Hello everyone,
It's been a while since I last wrote and I have been very tardy in reading
the digests. So I don't know if this topic has been covered lately.
I bought one of those discounted Ehman drives before it went out of buisness
and now I am plaged with problems. The drive is a zero foot print external
drive, 40 Mb [actually 42], and SCSI Probe [3.4] says it is a Seagate and has
a product number of ST251N. My Mac is a SE with a Mobius accelerator and it
is running sys 7.0 [I can't use 7.01 because I am limited to 800k with my old
drive].
The problem is a sever case of stiction. When ever I turn off the machine, it
is taking longer and longer to fire up. Most will say leave it on. I do, but
I went away for a few weeks and turned every thing off in my apt., when I got
back I tried to turn on the drive and it wouldn't spin. I sat and turned it
on and off for 45 min before it started to spin. I think that will be the
last time I turn it off.
What I want to do is replace the drive in the external case. I have been
looking at the May MacUser and APS has an ad for a internal Quantum ELS
drive [85Mb] for $199 and internal Maxtor [120Mb] for $229.[this is my price
range]
I want to know if this is possible and if either of these drives fit into the
external case? If not were can I get a drive to fit at about the same price
range? And finally, can stiction problems be fixed with out replacing the
drive?
Please respond via email....like I said, I don't read the entire digest very
often anymore [It has gotten way to big]

You should upgrade FileGuard to version 2.7.4. Under version 2.7.4, when a

hold down the Shift key to disable protection, he/she is prompted for a volume

Subject: floppy drives - cleaning and protection
Two questions about floppy drives:
I was told by my local apple dealer that it would be wise to insert a
plastic protective 'disk' into the floppy drive while my computer was off
to keep the dust out (we get LOTS of dust in these parts). He said that
this causes the head to move down and keeps dust from getting in.
Is this a recommended procedure??
He also mentioned using the floppy disk cleaners (a piece of cloth in
disc's clothing with an appropriate elixer) that could be used to keep the
head clean.
Is this a recommended procedure??

Ok. Let's *not* make this a flame war. I just strongly disagree. The way the
multi-tasking code is added is very controlled, not the least bit "haphazard"
and you can turn it OFF, globally, or selectively in your code. If there are
time critical parts of the code, just turn it off there. I'm just a dumb 'ole
fortran hacker, but this works and it is the neatest thing since sliced
bread!! Apple should put this into all the other MPW compilers!! ( And Think
should add it their products!) I *know* that it isn't preemptive; the point
is that it is USEFUL!!
Fortran programming is mainly hard core number crunching, and these are often
non-trivial computational tasks that can run for an hour or more, even on a
Quadra. It is nice, under those circumstances to have this backgrounding
capability. I haven't had any trouble with it, and, sheesh, if it works with
FORTRAN, it outa work with anything!
Finally, I also got a nice response (sorry, I didn't save it!) from someone at
apple who notes that same feature is available in their Lisp. I still don't
have
any idea why C and Pascal omit this useful option.

Subject: FTP woes: mac.archive.umich.edu and Old wuarchive.wustl.edu
Time for another embarrassing question! Make that two of them, in fact!
1. In the mirros archives of wuarchive.wustl.edu lies a folder called
"Old", inside of which a nice array of files exists. Nearly all of
them have been Zipped (I presume?) so that they have a final file-
type of ".Z", as in "Wonderul-extension.hqx.Z". Using plain-jane
Kermit through my modem, I'm unable to retrieve any of these files.
I get told that the file directory doesn't exist, or something to
that effect. I tried changing to "binary" but it doesn't help. I
have the necessary software to unZip files once I've got them, but
that won't help if I can't get them in the first place!
2. Another archive, mac.archive.umich.edu, specializes in a plentitude
of periods. Whereas other archives tend to put the dot only at the
significant spot so as to allow stupid machines like this IBM-VM
host to think in terms of filename.filetype, the mac.archive gives
files names like "Wonderful.extension.21.035.hqx". Retrieval at-
tempts give rise to the annoying reply that the file of that name
does not exist.
In both cases, I've tried highlighting and copying the complete file
name and pasting it after "get" on the command line (in fact, that's
standard operating procecure, since I don't have the kind of mind for
crisply recalling "Wonderful-extension-module-2-1.hqx" or whatever),
so we can eliminate Case-specificity or typos. What kind of foolish
error am I making here? (And why do they Zip the already compressed and
hexxified Old files over at wuarchive anyhow?, he wonders!)

Hi, hope this helps.
I have used this pin-outs with v.32 (9600) and v.32bis (14400) modems
successfully. If you are building one, easiest thing to do is to buy a Mac
to Imagewriter or Mac to switchbox cable and cut it in half. Get two DB25
connectors and you got two cables for two modems. I made one for DB9
connectors used on some pocket modems.
Mac Modem (DB25)
1 (HSKout) -> 4 (RTS) & 20 (DSR)
2 (HSKin) <- 5 (CTS)
3 (TxD-) -> 2 (TxD)
4 (GND) <-> 7 (Signal Gnd)
5 (RxD-) <- 3 (RxD)
6 (TxD+) -- NONE
7 (GPi) <- 8 (DCD)
8 (RxD+) <- 7 (Gnd)
If you do not wish to hack one you can usually get a hardware handshake
cable from some of the larger computer stores such as CompUSA or Computer
City. Prices varies, the cheapest I saw was in Computer City in Dallas
($5.95).
Best of luck!

This's incorrect. HW flow control is necessary for proper use of
V.42bis/MNP5 compression modems. With hardware data compression, DTE speed
(computer to modem) is typically set to a higher rate than DCE speed (modem
to a remote modem). One may be able to download files without flow control
(since the computer is generally able to handle the rate the data is coming
in). However, you'll definitely have problem UPLOADING files (modem won't
be able to handle the higher rate). SW flow control is no substitute,
epspecially for binary tranfers. In a binary transfer, data can contain
XON/XOFF characters and turning on SW flow control will cause problem.

The answer is yes and no. All Apple video cards (and built-in video in
IIsi/ci, Quadras, Centrises) use three sense pins to detect the type of
monitor attached. (Obviously, the type of monitor supported is different
for different cards or bulit-in videos). The 8*24 card is capable of
supporting 21" resolution (1152x870) as well as standard 640x480 and
640x870 resolutions. (The 8*24 card does NOT support the 16" or 19"
resolution). However, the NEC 3FGx is NOT capable of handling the 21"
resolution. It can handle the 16" resolution (832x624) but you would need a
different video card.
>Does NEC offer software that will enable my Mac to sgow a greater

No. The NEC software (DPI-On-The-Fly) only works with Quadras and Centrises
(which have programmable video controllers).

Subject: Idea for System 7.2 - undo in the desktop
I've been thinking about how Undo could be usefully implemented on the
Finder's desktop, and have come up with the following ideas.
1. To undo a dragging action.
Very often I accidentally drag an icon to a new location (on-screen, not
to a different directory) after having spent ages carefully lining them
up so my desktop isn't a mess. Clean-up isn't really all that useful for
this task, because of different name lengths etc.
So, I'd like to be able to undo the move, and I think it's emminently
possible to keep track of which icon was moved last and to put it back
again from the Finder's 'File' menu.
2. To undo the movement of a file
Similar to the above, sometimes I accidentally drag a file to the wrong
folder. It would be nice if I could simply undo this, rather than having

Anyone have any comments? Or ideas for other Finder enhancements?
Another one I think would be useful is the collapsing of a window to
just its title bar (as in Windowshade) or perhaps an icon (THINK

Also, who should I send these comments to to try and get them noticed?

Subject: IIvx Trouble
Hi folks,
Is anyone else having these problems and are there any suggestions for
fixing them?
We recently received 3 Mac IIvx machines in our office and I seem to be the
only one experiencing these problems consistently:
1. Occasionally on "SHUTDOWN" the Mac asks for a disk. Even though I
haven't had ANY disks in the drive at all. I have to use the switch at this
point to turn it off.
2. It will lock at odd times. I won't be able to use the mouse or the
keyboard, so I can't even force the app to quit. I have to do a hard boot.
I've tried to find some pattern to these occurances, but there doesn't seem
to be any. It's just as likely to hang with Wordperfect, as with MacTCP.
I've thought about using the patch for 7.1, but I'm not sure these are the
problems the "tune-up" fixes.
It's a Mac IIvx, 8 MB/230 MB, Sys 7.1, Asante E-Net card.
If anyone can shed any light on this mystery I'd be grateful.
Many Thanks,
Cindy

I use Copyright and it works great. The main thing that can cause to not
work is if you have used one of those hacks such as System 7 Pack or
Speedyfinder to allocate all memory to copying or if you are using
something such as Copydoubler which overrides it.

Subject: LaserWriter IIsc (A)
Several days ago I posted a question about a problem getting a LaserWriter
IIsc to print after installing network software for connecting a Mac II
with this printer to an ethernet LAN. As I have not seen an answer posted
to the info-mac digest, I would like to report two correct replies that
were e-mailed directly to me from digest readers so that all may know that
at least one question provoked satisfactory responses.
I wish to publicly thank Sylvia Elliott and Chris Pepper for their help.
The answer was that nothing was really wrong. I was merely ignorant and
blinded by my previous experience. The Personal LaserWriter SC driver is
the correct one for the LW IIsc in System 7. In the Chooser window there
is a "pane" in the upper right quadrant. For all printers I had used when
a printer driver is selected in the left part of Chooser window, the upper
right "pane" shows icons of printers that that driver could control.
However, this is only the case for printers (and modems) connected by the
serial ports (printer and modem ports). Printers and other devices that
are part of the SCSI chain do not have icons appear in the Chooser.
However, if I had paid attention I would have seen a message above that
upper right "pane" that said "LaserWriter IISC selected" This had been
there, but I had not seen it, until Sylvia and Chris assured me that my
setup would work!
And to top off my great luck with this question, all this was confirmed by
an Apple technical advisor in the Apple Federal office in northern
Virginia!

fine too.... without the scanner. We checked out the cables,

since no software has time to run (with possible exception of the driver of
the hard disk and the Enabler), the mac simply doesn't boot. At the
Authorised Apple dealer, the motherboard of the LCIII was replaced-> same
problem.
So then we tried another LCIII, same problem.
we tried another scanner: the Apple onescanner: same problem
we tried another vendor: an AGFA greyscale and A3 color scanner : same
problem: NO Mac LCIII we tried worked with a scanner. No problem was found
with other SCSI equipment (syquest).
So BE CAREFULL if you plan to use a scanner on a mac LCIII!

Dear Netters,
I posted a message two weeks ago asking where I might find a good Slot Machine
game to replace my old MacSlots with a game that works on an LC. I got a
response that MacBandit exists, however the responder did not know where to
find it. MacSlots: prizes $2-$500 (16 different prize amounts), the more
time played the more money you can put into the machine. The amount you put
into the machine is then multiplied by the prize amount making the prizes
increase above the normal $500 limit. B & W or Color is fine, as I have an

And some filetypers can do that easily for you.
"FileTyper 4.0" lets you create drag&drop filetype changers.
Very convenient!
There's also the drag&drop utility "TypeResolve" that lets you
assign a type for any suffix you specify to the filename.
So it can change your text files that end with, say, "math" to a

Try Finder Palette from Anchor Beech software, Rob. It's shareware and
it cost me $20. Aesthetically it's very well
done and I run it with no problems under System 7.1.
My version is 1.0. There may have been an update or the author may have
stopped supporting it. The docs promise you a fuller manual and a disk
of custom icons if you send in the fee. I haven't received anything yet
(about 6 months later). Mind you, the address is in Alaska!
FP seems to be incompatible with Connectix' Maxima, at least if you run
your system from the Ram disk. I tried lots of configurations but basically
FP loses icons and paths.
There is at least one, perhaps two, commercial variants. One is called
Square One Palette, from Binary Software. It's about $50 mail order
tho' Mac Warehuose sells it for less than $20 if you buy System 7.1
at the same time. And a while ago in MAcWeek there was mention of
a similar product from a company called PBM Software (apparently PBM
stands for "Please Buy My". I can't find these guys listed in the

I don't know how well either commercial product works. FP works fine.

You could use MS Word. Renumber (paragraphs) is in the Tools menu

------------------------------------
What you need is DVIM-72-Mac or OzPSPrint. Both are available from
midway.uchicago.edu. DVIM-72-Mac is also available from its original
source, bigbird.csd.scarolina.edu.
DVIM-72-Mac prints DVI files as output from OzTeX on QuickDraw printers (dot
matrix, inkjet or non-Postscript laser). I have used it very successfully
with HP DeskWriters. It will not interpret epsf graphics if included, so you
should make sure that your graphics are saved as PICT files. It is very
stable and does an excellent job. I suggest turning the `draw offscreen'
option OFF (there is certainly a bug in this option on my Centris 650, but
not on an accelerated LC).
OzPSPrint prints Postscript files, as output from OzTeX on QuickDraw
printers. It is a very cut-down Postscript interpreter (it implements the
absolute bare minimum subset of Postscript commands needed to print TeX
documents), written in QuickBasic. It also will not interpret epsf graphics.
Compared to DVIM-72-Mac it is a `quick and dirty hack', but it will do the
job. PICT bitmaps only print at 72 dpi, though.
If you need to convert epsf s to PICT, you can use GhostScript, available
>From sumex-aim.stanford.edu.
-------------------------------------------------
You can print to the Personal LW LS using the
program DVIM72 that should come with OzTeX.
(It is on the midway.uchicago.edu site)
I have a P LW LS at home and it works fine
(but slow)!

Subject: SCSI disk from Sun to Mac? (Q)
I have been trying to install a Quantum 210 MB SCSI-disk on a Mac IIfx, but
I have meet some problems. I am not able to install and/or format the disk.
The disk has previously been used on a Sun SPARCstation and has been tested
to work perfectly well on it.
I have tryed to use Silverlining (version 5.4), but it does not recognize
the disk. It finds a disk at right SCSI port (SCSI-0), but is not able to
find correct volume information etc. It believes it is a disk with -710 MB,
and other information is total chaos. When Silverlining is trying
to format the disk, it reports a lot of read and write errors.
Apple HD SC Setup is "unable to locate a suitable drive connected to the
SCSI port."
The disk is a Quantum ProDrive 210S.
The disk is supposed to replace an old Apple 40 MB disk at SCSI-0.
The Mac is a Mac II upgraded to a Mac IIfx.
Any suggestions ?

I got a few requests about the sound input device (SID) that I mentioned in
a previous Info-Mac. So here is the information I was able to dig up.
If you have a SID that is compatible with a MacRecorder, then the following
driver can be used with system 6.0.7 and up (including System 7.1) to
record sounds in most programs that support sound input:
/info-mac/util/mac-recorder-driver-102.hqx
I am uploading the SID II information under a separate message.
I take no responsibility for the information contained in the file and
don't even know if it is accurate any longer.

Subject: Spooling Postscript files (Q), Printing ASCII files with page breaks
(Q)
I have been using LaserWriter Utilities 7.4 to print postscript files. It
works fine except that I can't do anything else with the computer while its
doing its thing.
Is there a way to spool postscript files so it either prints in the
background or uses the standard System 7 printspooler?
On another printing topic;
Is there a way to easily print files that are "formated ASCII" meaning that
they come from the DOS or UNIX world and have actual Page Breaks in the
file that normally would generate a Form Feed. When I try to print these
files from any of the editors I have, the page breaks are never seen (or
acted upon) by the laser printer.
Thanks!

Subject: Stuffit Lite vs. Compactor Pro
In #92, someone replied to a question about Stuffit Lite vs. Compactor Pro.
Well, actually I think it's called Compact Pro. I personally prefer it.
Stuffit Lite is the shareware version of a commercial product (Stuffit
Deluxe).
In my experience, Stuffit Lite isn't as fast as Compact Pro, and generally
saves about the same amount of space. If you're really curious about the
differences, though, just download both and compare... Just remember to trash
the one which you decide against, and to pay the shareware fee for the one you
keep!
There was a time when it made a big difference which program you had,
Because Compact Pro couldn't uncompress files made with Stuffit Lite, and
vice-
versa. Now, however, there are free utilities like Stuffit Expander, which
will do all that sort of thing for you.
-- Jeremy
disclaimer: I have no association with either program, although I have paid
the shareware fee for my version of Compact Pro (And trashed Stuffit Lite

As far as I can tell, Compact Pro is the one to go for. There are so many
different incarnations of Stuffit-something or Unstuffsomething around that
are not always compatible with one another that I gave up and stuck with
Compact Pro. I must admit however to keeping up with the Unstuffits
(free!) for the occasional downloaded file.

-r 25386 Jul 28 1991 ./util/sit-cpt-110.hqx
So there is a utility that converts from SIT to CPT after all.
As you can see by the date, it almost two years old.
I was told that it just works with StuffIt archives up to version 1.5.1.
Well, doesn't this cry for an update?
After all, it's StuffIt 3.0.5 for some time now.

Subject: System Software 7.0 About Finder (thank you)
Dear Netters,
Thank you for your replies. To clarify, I was simply hoping that I didn't
have to get the tuneup to get more space from my system. Is there a
freeware/shareware that does this without the incompatibility problems that
exist with 32-bit addressing on. I.e. any way to access above 8 MB without
32-bit addressing? (LC/I 10 MB RAM+ System 7.0.0)
The following configurations on my machine yield the following results in
About Finder - System Software:
16-byte Cache +
32-bit addressing on
No extensions: 1 MB
Extensions on: 1.5 MB
32-bit addressing off
No extensions: 3 MB
Extensions on: 3.5 MB
To get total available memory subtract these values from 10 MB.
I have about 12 Extensions working, and have reduced my Apple Menu to a size
that is again visible without dragging past a down arrow.
Sincerely,
ABRODY @ CLARKU

Subject: using scanf in Think C maclike programs (Q)
A collegue of mine has a Think C program in which he uses standard
menus, windows, etcetera. At the same time he wants to be able to
use 'scanf' and 'printf'. printf works fine, but scanf doesn't. This
is explained in the Think manuals. At the same time I remember having
read _somewhere_ that it is possible to use scanf in 'normal' Mac
programs using some hack involving QuickDraw initialization. I don't
remember where I read it, though.
My question therefore is:
Does anybody know how to mix standard C (i.e. printf and scanf) and
standard Macintosh code using Think C?
Thanks beforehand,

Subject: zmodem transfer summary
Many thanks to all of you who respoded regaring my zterm/zmodem file
transfer problems. There were several suggestions for me to try to
resolve my Data CRC error @xxxxx and Hd CRC error @xxxxxx problems.
The Data CRC errors still occur, but zterm now handles them and carries on.
I am happy to say that the Hd CRC error problems have not occured since I
made three changes.
1. In zterm, under the Settings/Zmodem options... menu, I made sure that
the
Cmd to start receive at other end is set at rz (Unix) and that the Esc
control characters box is selected.
2. To initiate file transfers I use the command sz -w 1024 {filename}
Since making those changes I have not had any more problems and all file
transfers have been successful. Thanks again to people like Keith Johnson
